Cozy chic. That's how Coy Miller and his daughter Molly describe the furniture and home decor at Nest, their family-run store in North Auburn. Leslie Miller, Coy's wife and business partner, fills every nook of the 8,000-square-foot space with a little bit of this and a little bit of that, Coy said, and she creates all of the displays herself.
In addition to couches, tables and love seats, a few of the items a shopper might want to take home from Nest include jewelry, handbags, inspirational and quirky signs, candles and pillows.
Leslie cherrypicks the best of everything, Coy said, with an eye for the home goods Auburnites will most appreciate. That was the deal the couple made when Coy invited Leslie to take her place in the family business nearly four years ago.
Coy stepped into his parents' furniture business years ago and for eight years owned Headman Furniture where Staples is currently located on Grass Valley Highway. Eventually, he opened the Sleep Shop, just up the street from where Headman's had been, and became an expert in mattresses. His son runs a second Sleep Shop in Grass Valley.
The current location of Nest was originally used only as a mattress warehouse, but when Coy and Leslie became empty-nesters (no pun intended) Coy asked Leslie if she'd want to manage a retail store at the site as well.
"She told me mattresses are boring," Coy said, laughing.
But she agreed to open Nest, where locals would find furniture made in the U.S., as well as other eclectic and winsome goodies to fill a home.
The store is such a success, Coy said, he had to move his office to the Nest location to keep up.
The couple enjoys working together as well as working with their four children and their grandchildren, Coy said. In fact, that's his favorite part of the job.
"Being able to go to work and spend time with my family is a great thing," he said.
The store is so child-friendly there's even a miniature Nest playhouse to entertain the smallest shoppers.
Coy is also proud that none of his employees work on commission, which helps keep prices reasonable and delivery free.
"No commission means no pressure," he said. "We want this to be a loving atmosphere."
Nest is located at 3880 Grass Valley Hwy.
The store is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
