Love a good book? Love a good bargain? The Humane Society of the Sierra Foothills bookstore is the place for you. Not only does the bookstore offer about 15,000 gently loved books at a dollar a piece (some are 25 cents), but the proceeds go toward protecting large rescue animals in Placer County.
The nonprofit, which is run by about 20 volunteers, helps support a 17-acre ranch that houses animals of hoof and claw -- and sometimes even wings.
In addition to a few dogs and cats, the organization has rescued horses, sheep, llamas and even bees.
You won't find the animals inside the bookstore, but there are books about the critters.
There are many genres of books available for every kind of reader. A few sections include: travel, finances, poetry, history, and a small room dedicated to children's books.
The fiction section is so large it's separated into several areas. A few of these include mystery, science fiction, young adult and romance.
And every reader will appreciate this: The books are shelved in alphabetical order -- a rare find at a used bookstore.
"If you know the author, you can go right to the book," said Jan Van Waardenberg. "A lot of other thrift stores will just throw the books on the shelves in any order."
Van Waardenberg and his wife have volunteered at the bookstore for about two years, sorting and shelving books. As former bookstore owners from the Santa Cruz area, they enjoy being back in the stacks.
Each volunteer spends at least four hours a week in the store, though many spend much more time than that.
It's not only books that are sorted. The store also offers magazines, DVDs, VHS movies (remember those?) and CDs.
Plus, the store offers a small seating area where a book lover might sit for a spell and try out a book or two, or just enjoy a good read.
For those super-duper bargain buyers: Stop in on Tightwad Tuesday when a purchase of five books will get you a sixth book free.
